Rosa Parks is Born in Alabama
On this date in 1913, Rosa McCauley was born in Tuskegee, Ala.
She and her husband, Raymond Parks, settled in Montgomery, where both became active in the local chapter of the NAACP, with Rosa serving as secretary for more than a decade. In 1955, when she refused to give up her seat on a city bus so a white man could sit down, Rosa Parks sparked the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott. In the end, the bus system was integrated. At her death in 2005, Rosa Parks was popularly eulogized as the mother of the civil rights movement.
