CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A north suburban man who was cited for DUI after his vehicle rear-ended a Chicago Police squad car in the Lake View neighborhood is being sued by the officers, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday in the U.S. Circuit Court.

Nathaniel Byram, then 31, was driving westbound in the 2500 block of West Addison about 1:40 a.m. when his vehicle rear-ended a squad car on Sept. 7, 2012, according to police and the lawsuit.

The two officers were in the middle of a traffic stop when the crash happened, said Robert Harlib, an attorney representing the officers.

One officer was leaning against the squad car at the time of the crash and was “lifted airborne” and landed against the front hood of the vehicle, the suit said. The other officer was inside the vehicle and also suffered injuries.

The two policemen, both from the Town Hall Police District, were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious condition, police said at the time. A third person, a civilian, was also injured in the crash and taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital in serious condition.

Byram, of the 2100 block of West Beachwood Avenue in Wilmette, was cited with DUI, reckless driving, failure to reduce speed, following too close, and not having insurance, police said at the time.

The officer's two-count suit is seeking unspecified damages plus court costs.
