Preps begin for "Glendale Glitters" as workers prep 1.5 million lights

GLENDALE, Ariz. - It may only be the first week of September and 107 degrees outside but workers in Glendale got into the holiday spirit Wednesday, setting up a decades-old tradition, Glendale Glitters.

In the sweltering heat workers spread a little holiday cheer in historic downtown Glendale.

"We run about 12-13 people normally here in the park, and the streets, the adjacent streets in Glendale," said Ben Bennett.

Using cherry pickers and ladders to string more than 1.5 million Christmas lights for this year's Glendale Glitters Celebration.

"So it's about an 8-week program for us to put it up, it's a 1.5 million lights, it's quite a huge task," he said.

It's the 21st year that the city has put on the award winning display, and they've made some big changes this year.

"We have changed all the lights out to LED lights," said Bennett.

"The other thing we're going to be doing is a lot more animation in the park so more dancing trees, more of the lights that dance and are programmed," he said.

The season may be closer than you think, with Halloween parties starting next month the holiday rush will begin shortly after. But even with the early preparations the lights at Glendale Glitters won't flicker on until late November, giving planners time to get everything just perfect.

"We get plenty of time to change things up, and we do walkthroughs with Glendale to make sure everything is the way they like it," said Bennett.

The festivities attract more than a quarter of a million people annually and will officially begin on November 28th.
