MESA, Ariz. - A 23-year-old man was arrested for fatally shooting another man the same day he was released from prison.

Ignacio Eide Lomeli Jr. and his family were having a barbecue near Mesa Drive and Broadway Road to celebrate his release from prison on Sunday.

A man reportedly drove into the parking lot where Lomeli and his family were hanging out and Lomeli became suspicious.

Detectives say Lomeli told them he felt threatened by the man and approached him with a gun in his waistband.

The men briefly exchanged words before Lomeli shot the man while he was sitting in his vehicle; he died instantly.

Police say Lomeli and the man did not know each other.

Lomeli reportedly claimed he shot the man in self-defense because he believed the man had a weapon in his hands and he felt threatened.

According to police, no weapon was found on or near the man's body. Police have not identified the deceased man yet.

Lomeli has been charged with one count second degree murder, one count misconduct involving weapons and one count tampering with evidence.
