DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -  Detroit Police say that 2014 could end with the lowest number of homicides since the 1960s.

Despite three separate shootings over Labor Day weekend, Detroit Police Chief James Craig says that 2014 could end with fewer than 300 homicides.

As of Monday, the current number sits at 194.

"We're down in every category," Craig said. "When you look at robberies for example, carjackings. Our steepest reduction, down 36 percent,  robberies, down 35 percent in carjackings."

On the job 14 months, Craig says though last month, 189 homicides were reported - a 14 percent decline from last year.

He says it is an example of how hard his team of about 2,300 officers is working.
