Man saves family from burning home

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters are calling a man a hero after he helped save a family from a burning home in DeKalb County.

Officials say the fire broke out at a house on Blue Bird Lane Monday morning.

Eddie Hamilton, a neighbor, lives a few doors down from the home. Hamilton tells FOX 5 he heard some commotion outside and when he walked over he saw a mother outside the front of the home screaming.

Hamilton grabbed something to break through a window and pulled two children, ages 3 and 10, out of the home. Hamilton then went inside the burning home to rescue a teenager.

The DeKalb County Fire Department arrived and helped Hamilton pull the 17-year-old out of the home through the window.

"There was no decision, someone had to get them out of there so I busted the window and went to work," said Hamilton.

There is extensive damage to the home. Officials say the two younger children are recovering from minor injuries. The teenager remains in the hospital in critical condition.

FOX 5 will continue to update this developing story.
