Posted: Updated:

Today is Monday, September 1, the 244th day of 2014. There are 121 days left in the year. This is Labor Day.

MCDONNELL JURY SET TO DELIBERATE - Today is the last day that jurors in the corruption trial of former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife Maureen will have to wait before they can take up the case. The U.S. District Judge overseeing the case issued his jury instructions to the panel Friday, before giving them the Labor Day Holiday off. The McDonnell's are facing 14 federal charges including bribery, corruption and conspiracy for accepting $165,000 in gifts and loans from businessman Jonnie Williams in exchange for promoting his business.

AREA TERROR CONCERNS - Maryland Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, says he's skeptical skeptical that the Islamic State group ISIS is set to launch terror attacks inside the United States. Appearing on CNN Sunday, Ruppersberger says a lot more needs to be known before judging whether Islamic State extremists plan to commit terrorist acts in the U.S. any time soon. The group's priority now seems to be to hold on to territory it has gained rather than export violence. The Obama administration is under increasing criticism for it's response to the group, although the US airstrikes in Iraq have significantly impacted the groups advance.

MARYLAND CANDIDATES ON PARADE - 1 p.m. Gaithersburg holds it's 76th annual parade in Olde Town today. Yes, they'll be antique cars, dance groups and marching bands. But it's an election year and that means political candidates will be out and about shaking hands and trying to get some face time with voters the old fashioned way. Maryland's Democratic Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown is considered the heavy favorite to win the Governors race this year. Republican Larry Hogan though has been hitting the airways hoping for an election upset.

PURPLE LINE PETITION - Opponents to the light-rail Purple Line project have filed a official petition with the Secretary of the Interior to stop the Purple Line. The group The Center for Biological Diversity filed a legal petition asking the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop a plan to save the Hay’s spring amphipod, a small shrimp-like species just 5-10 millimeters long, is colorless, and lives underground. Friends of the Capital Crescent Trail claim the project will harm the species along the proposed route. Supporters of the purple line are dismissing the move. Purple Line Now President Ralph Bennett said in a statement his group “is confident that this lawsuit will be found to have no merit.”
