Man dies following double shooting at cookout

Posted: Updated:

A Decatur man who was struck in a double shooting at a Labor Day cookout has died.

According to police, gunfire broke out following an argument over a cell phone at a holiday cookout over the weekend. Shots were fired in between 11:00 and 11:30 p.m.

Police say Kardarius Collins, 26, was shot and a stray bullet went into a nearby house on Scarbrough Drive, striking a 10-year-old girl.

Collins was outside a vehicle when he was shot. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and died Tuesday afternoon.

"I don't care if it was a cellphone, he shouldn't have died in vain," said Tina Simmons, the victim's mother.

The girl is also in serious condition, but police say they don't consider her injuries life threatening.
