WHEATON, Md. -

Montgomery County police officers and a local animal hospital are being credited with saving a dog shot in Wheaton last week.

At Kindness Animal Hospital, they are living up to their name. And help they did last week after somebody shot a 9-month-old boxer mix named Ruby in the face with a shotgun.

“It was the worst injury I've seen to any animal or human,” said Montgomery County Police Officer Noah Leotta.

“Bleeding profusely, she was having trouble breathing and she was starting to lose consciousness,” said Sergeant Dawn Felsen.

“Officer Ballor just took off as soon as she could because the injury was so bad,” Officer Leotta said.

Dr. Jeff Zolkiewicz knew it didn't look good.

“This looked like a case you kind of go, 'Oh, my gosh. This is not going to end well,” he said.

But he and his staff jumped into action. When Ruby arrived here at Kindness Animal Hospital, all they could do was stabilize her. At that point, a police officer went the extra mile and got back on the phone with the family and them to sign over ownership of the dog so that the doctor here could do the surgeries needed to save Ruby's life.

“We dumped this in their lap without warning and they -- with open arms -- accepted her,” said Sergeant Felsen.

The hospital is absorbing the cost of her care.

“I have another dog at home, a 9-year-old lab, and I have three children,” said Dr. Zolkiewicz. “As long as everybody gets along, she will be my dog.”

And the Montgomery County police officers directly involved have dogs of their own too.

“She wasn't trying to hurt anybody,” said Felsen. “Anytime you have a victim like that, it really strikes a nerve.”

Ruby's story has touched the community. One woman stopped by to donate some ruby red towels for the dog.

“Those are the two pluses in this area -- kindness and the Fourth District police,” the woman said. “They're fantastic.”

“[Ruby] never complains,” said Dr. Zolkiewicz. “She lets us do whatever we need to do. She only whines when she goes back in the cage.”

There have been no arrests made, but police are investigating the case.
