What to do if you're caught in a rip current

A warning if you're hitting the beach this summer -- rip currents could be a problem. Rip currents can carry away even strong swimmers, so don't take chances when red flags are up and/or life guards aren't on duty. Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. They typically extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone, and past the line of breaking waves. Rip currents can occur at any beach with breaking waves, including the Great Lakes.

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The rip current risk remains high along the New Jersey and New York coastlines. Some beaches were open to the public but closed to swimmers.

The National Weather Service issued a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement for the area beaches because of the effects of Hurricane Cristobal, which is expected to track south and east of the Jersey shore through Thursday.

On Long Island, swimming is prohibited at Jones Beach, Robert Moses and Hither Hills state parks. Swimming is still allowed at the Sunken Meadow, Wildwood and Orient Beach state parks on Long Island Sound.  It also is allowed at the Great South Bay beach at Heckscher State Park.

A teenager drowned while swimming off an unguarded beach at Sandy Hook in the Gateway National Recreation Area in New Jersey on Tuesday evening.

New Jersey can expect surf of 3 to 5 feet.

"High surf and large swells will produce dangerous pounding surf and rip currents at the beaches," the NWS said in the alert. "These rip currents will be life threatening to anyone who enters the surf. Anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf."

New York may see surf as high as 8 feet.

"Dangerous rip currents can be expected through Thursday," the NWS said. "Minor beach erosion and some wash-over possible, especially around the times of high tide Thursday morning."
