Welcome Home Rally Held For Taney Dragons In LOVE Park

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA - Mayor Nutter, city officials and fans welcomed home the Taney Dragons, the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Little League champions on Sunday afternoon.

The team returned to cheering crowds from their historic run at the 2014 Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

FOX 29's Sabina Kuriakose was there for the warm welcome home.

"You young people have put Philadelphia on the map,” said Mayor Nutter. “It's a classic Philadelphia story. Group of kids from all different neighborhoods, different schools come together.”

After a heartbreaking loss to Chicago last week, the team's winning streak ended just shy of the title game.

However, their legend is still going strong. The young players have become role models, and some of Philly's best ambassadors.

13-year-old p Mo'ne Davis showed the world just what it means to "pitch like a girl."

“I don't think she realizes how big this is yet, but she's fine. She knows where she's at, but she doesn't know how big this is,” said her father, Mark Williams.

Mo'ne's father also says the remarkably calm and levelheaded pitcher is taking her newfound celebrity in stride.

“Everything and everybody rushing her every time is starting to make me a little protective,” said Williams.

The baseball standouts were greeting fans like pros on Sunday.

“I'm just happy that the city is excited it's a good thing for the city and for Lippy's hometown he loves living here. He's lived here his whole life right here in the center of the city, so to be able to make everyone have a better, more interesting summer is great,” said Lefty Erik Lipson's father.

The media blitz isn't going to stop for Taney. They have several television appearances scheduled for this week, a champions parade thrown by the city on Wednesday, and five birthdays to catch up on that they didn't get to celebrate while they were on the road. And of course, next week they're back to being regular kids as the first day of classes start for the players.
