Police warn about crimes near Ga. Tech

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. -

Police are warning Georgia Tech students about violent, armed robberies reported near the campus.

The day before classes started, August 17, two men leaving a Burger King near campus spotted a suspect rummaging through their car. The man turned violent when the two men confronted him.

“As he was leaving that parking lot, fired shots with a handgun, at the two victims,” said Sgt. Greg Lyon with the Atlanta Police Department. “Fortunately no one was struck.”

On August 18, the next day, two other men were robbed at gunpoint outside The Varsity. Police say the victims met their attacker through Craigslist, agreeing to purchase cell phones from the man in the restaurant's parking lot. Police say instead of making the transaction, the attacker produced a handgun and robbed the victims of the cash they were going to buy the cell phones with.

Both crimes occurred in broad daylight.

The two crimes did not involve anyone from Georgia Tech, but given the proximity to campus officials are warning students to be on high alert.

“I definitely feel safe on campus, but getting these notifications of robberies, especially armed robberies, near campus is very concerning,” said Georgia Tech freshman Alex Steen. “Especially as a female”

Investigators say even though the Georgia Tech campus is a safe environment, crimes like these show why constant vigilance is so important.
