Police Officer Helps Deliver Baby, Parents Name It After Him

Posted: Updated:

ELK GROVE, CA- An Elk Grove family is paying special tribute to a specific police officer.

Something unexpected happened to Officer Dan Templeton while on patrol that he will never forget, and it was caught on dash-cam.

Vanessa Rios and her husband were driving to the hospital. She was in labor.

But the baby was ready to come into the world a bit sooner than expected.

With the help and quick thinking of Officer Templeton, the baby was delivered.

But he was turning blue, and Officer Templeton was able to get him breathing again.

He had basic training on delivering babies but says he based his knowledge on seeing his own children's births.

"I could feel that baby was starting to come, we were on our way toward Elk Grove Boulevard," said Vanessa.

"In the moment you're in the zone, you're so focused on what you have to do, you don't even have time to think, but once the baby was delivered, the adrenaline rush, I'm shaking," said Officer Templeton.

That was the first time an elk grove police officer delivered a baby solo.

After that event, the department created a brand-new policy allowing the baby's mother to keep the dashcam video.
