Police investigate possible hate crime connection in recent Palmer Park shootings

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Three shootings in the area of Palmer Park over the weekend have Detroit Police working to determine if the shootings are possibly connected.

One person was killed in the parking lot of the water park at Palmer Park at Woodward & Six Mile. Two other people were shot in separate incidents. Police say they were walking when all of a sudden they felt a sharp pain in their leg. Both of those victims survived. No one has been arrested.

Detroit Police confirm the two people who were wounded identify as transgender people. Police say, knowing the victims are transgender, investigators are unable to rule out the possibility of a hate crime.

A cab driver tells Fox 2 he sees ongoing prostitution both day and night.

"They are out here and it's not safe for them," the cab driver says. "You mess around, and you get a [person looking for a prostitute] that don't know [the prostitute is] a man, and it becomes something totally different brother."

In November, a person was found murdered in a black trash container in an alley near 6 Mile and Woodward. That victim was also a transgender person.

Police confirm the area of 6 Mile and Woodward has long been associated with gay, bisexual and transgendered lifestyles.

So, until the shootings are solved, police say a hate crime will not be ruled out.
