Smith Auer Band, formed by local marines, playing shows with country superstars

Posted: Updated:

After years of singing along with their favorite country bands, two local marines have made it onto the big stage.

Captain Matt Smith and Captain John Ed Auer, both stationed at 8th and I Marine Corps Barracks, formed a country band - the Smith Auer Band - after finding the music helped them pass the time while deployed.

Both have deployed twice during ‘Operation Enduring Freedom.'

Smith, a Kentucky native, and Auer, from Tennessee, say their music took off after playing for their co-workers at the Barracks.

They were featured during ACM's ‘Salute to the Troops,' and were able to perform with country superstars, Lady Antebellum.

They were also just tapped to open for A-List performers Ceelo Green and Little Big Town in an upcoming concert on Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling.

The concert is Sept. 20 and starts at 6:00 p.m.
