Police: hundreds of accounts breached

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of card numbers have been stolen by a group of thieves in Henry County.

Gail Whitner had no idea when she used her debit card at a SunTrust Bank ATM in Henry County, she would end up in the middle of a financial nightmare. Whitner, like hundreds of others, had her card information stolen when crooks put skimmers on two ATMs.

“These guys are very sophisticated. They were able to put a very tiny camera inside the key pad and capture the PIN. They then made duplicate cards and used them at various ATMs to withdraw money," said Lt. Joey Smith.

Smith says this crew could be part of a much larger organization operating throughout the southeast.

Whitner says her savings account was wiped out, leaving her with just a little more than seven dollars. She says it's been scary and humiliating.

“I had to borrow money from my church just to pay my mortgage,” said Whitner.

SunTrust is working with everyone whose information was stolen, and will return whatever money was lost. Most banks follow the same principle, but not all, so it's always best to check with your bank.
