Emanuel: 57 public schools get air conditioning

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) - Chicago officials say classroom air conditioning has been installed in 57 public schools, with 29 more scheduled to get it by the end of October.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett say the first phase of the project was completed on time and under budget.

The school district has said it will provide air conditioning in all classrooms. Officials say 154 schools have gotten air conditioning in the past two years.

Parents and teachers have complained about sweltering classrooms in some schools, saying it makes it difficult for students to learn.

Officials say they prioritized schools that had no air conditioning and now are including those with partial air conditioning.
