Police: Father shot 3-year-old in head, slashed her throat

Posted: Updated:
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md - The murder of a 3-year-old girl at the hands of her own father left many stunned over the weekend.  On Monday, Prince George's County police said Frederick Miller shot his daughter in the head before being shot and killed by police, but it's not clear why Miller abducted his daughter.

Chief Mark Magaw said Monday that domestic assaults and murders have been "challenging" for his department this month, and Saturday's shooting on Branch Avenue was nothing short of "heart wrenching" for everyone involved.  Magaw said some of the questions surrounding the shooting have been answered, but not all of them.

Just after 1 p.m. Saturday, police spotted Miller's car on Branch Avenue after getting a number of calls to 911 reporting that the 38-year-old father had just abducted his 3-year-old daughter after shooting the child's grandfather and great-grandmother.

Chife Magaw said officers exchanged gunfire with Miller twice before he was fatally wounded.  The little girl was found dead inside the car, and her throat had also been slashed.  He said ballistics tests show the gunfire that killed the little girl did not come from any of the officers who opened fire at teh scene.

"After consultation with the medical examiner, there is no one else who could have killed this baby girl other than her father."

Magaw said it is unclear when Miller would have killed the girl, whether it was before or after the police pursuit began.  Until Saturday, the police department was unaware of any domestic issues involving Miller and the girl's mother.

In terms of what may have set him off, the chief says the couple had been having ongoing issues regarding custody.  The family told police that Miller was in a bad wreck two years ago and sustained a traumatic brain injury. It's unknown whether that played a role.

On Monday morning, Prince George's County police had another homicide to investigate. A woman in her 30s was found dead inside her apartment in the 6800 block of West Forest Road in Landover.  Police say a relative found the victim with trauma to the body after entering the apartment with a key. She was there to return the victim's young children after babysitting them overnight.  It's not clear what the children saw, if anything.
