Chicago Air and Water Show canceled

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The Chicago Air and Water Show was canceled Sunday because of fog after a three-hour delay, then a temporary suspension.

The show was delayed by three hours before it got underway about 1:30 p.m. with a rescue demonstration. The low clouds along the lakefront, however, did not lift as quickly as hoped and the show was suspended about 2 p.m.

At 3 p.m., the show was officially canceled due to low fog in Gary, Indiana, where planes for the show were coming in from, spokeswoman Mary May said. The fog ceiling was just 400 feet above the ground, making it impossible for planes to take off, May said.

The 2011 show was canceled because of weather, May said.

The National Weather Service said the area was experiencing “rare low clouds.” Since 1973, only 2 to 3 percent of August days in the area have had low clouds, or those below 1,000 feet, the weather service said.
