Candlelight vigil held to remember 3-year-old Knijah Bibb

Posted: Updated:

It was an emotional vigil Friday night for a 3-year old shot and killed while she was playing in a room at a Landover, Md., home. Several hundred people came to Northwest D.C. to where her family lives.

Many knew Knijah Bibb, but some just showed up -- feeling they had to be there.

It was a vigil that many wish could have never happened. Those who attended ranged from people who knew the young child to her teachers and those who knew her family. But many did not personally know Knijah, but they just felt they had to do something after the death of an innocent little child.

“This hurt more than anything that I've ever gone through,” said Knijah's mother, Shadon.

Knijah was killed while visiting a home in Landover last weekend. Police say this all started when Davon Wallace was told to leave the home located on Forrest Terrace. But officers say he returned hours later and sprayed the house with bullets. One of the bullets went into the home and hit the 3-year-old.

“I was with my baby when she died,” Knijah's mother said. “I tried to save her, but I just couldn't keep her alive.”

Wallace is still on the loose and police are continuing to search for him.

Police have arrested 24-year old Brian Campbell this week. He is suspected of providing Wallace with the weapon and transportation after the shooting.

Knijah's death has stopped a family from going home. The Landover relatives she was visiting have not returned because of fear and a little life was taken inside their doors.

“I'm frightened,” said Karla Mack, Knijah's cousin. “I'm scared for my kids and myself. He can come back at any time and we are next.”

Knijah's funeral is set for next Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Unity Baptist Church on Bladensburg Road in Northeast D.C.
