Health Works: 'Horsey house calls for children with cancer

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Imagine your surprise when you see a horse is at the door - it's a horsey house call.

Inside this house is 9-year-old Gabby, who has no idea this is outside.

Everybody is in the house and they have no idea a horse is about to come out here.

They call her Queen B and she's about to make Gabby's day.

Gabby has just been diagnosed with leukemia, but Camp Casey is here to help her forget that for a day.

"Throughout the summer we travel through the metro Detroit area surprising kids at their door step with a horse,:" said Danielle Gilbert from Camp Casey.

It was family friend Amanda Clark who set up the visit and it paid off.

"Just the look on their faces, I almost started crying," Clarke said. "It was awesome."

"It's a horse," Gabby said.

For 10 years Camp Casey, named in memory of a 12-year-old horse lover who could not beat cancer, has been making horsey house calls.

The house calls touch the lives of the children  with cancer and their families.

"It's just overwhelming, it's wonderful," said Gabby's mother Erika Dodd.

For Dodd, watching her daughter fight cancer has been inspirational.

"She loves life, kids look at it differently so that gives us strength," she said.

Sitting pretty on Queen B strolling down the sidewalk, is something Gabby will never forget. Neither will her mom.

"I got to ride it!" she said.

"With this kind of thing it's really hard to go through," Dodd said  "But when you have people that you know love you and support you it's awesome."

Camp Casey has openings still available to make a horsey house call.
