Is Every Child Entitled To A Free Public Education Regardless Of Immigration Status?

Posted: Updated:

John Deasy could have a career as an evangelical preacher. That's my humble opinion after watching him up close advocating for children since he was appointed Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District in April of 2011.

Today's subject matter was undocumented students, those part of the wave of illegal immigrants fleeing Central American countries. As you may or may not know, federal law mandates that every child is entitled to a free public education regardless of their immigration status, and that is a law that Deasy embraces with fervor. "It's an educational issue, not a political issue " he told me outside the District's Assessment Center where new students get help enrolling, get vaccinations, get counseling if needed. He doesn't understand how some don't view it that simply. "It is a simple issue sir. ''

On the other hand, the President of a group called "Americans for Legal Immigration ", based in North Carolina and claiming 50, 000 members, told me over the phone '' We think that every effort should be made to dissuade illegal immigration from occurring. when illegal immigrants are enrolled in schools it's a form of theft of taxpayer resources." Deasy couldn't disagree more. '' Try looking a five year old in the eye and telling them that '' he said. Deasy and his people estimate about 1000 of these undocumented , unaccompanied students will enroll in his 650,000 student district this year, he says ''We service all students, their documentation is not our concern, our concern is their education their safety and their welfare .''
