Police searching for person of interest in Northeast DC apartment sex assault

Posted: Updated:

D.C. police need your help in finding a man who is a person of interest in a sex assault case at a Northeast D.C. apartment.

Police say he waited outside the secured apartment building, walked in after someone else swiped their keycard and then attacked a woman inside.

Police have released surveillance video of the person of interest.

Here is what the security camera captured: the first man, his face blurred by police, entered the apartment building with the person of interest following right behind him.

He is a young man and did not seem concerned that his face would be seen. Police say he is a friend or acquaintance of the adult woman he allegedly groped inside the victim's apartment on the night of July 30 at Aventien Fort Totten apartment complex.

The complex in the 300 block of Hamilton Street, NE, and is a short walk to the Fort Totten Metro station. It is convenient for residents as well as easy access for strangers.

Wanda Arrington works as a home health care aide for a resident of the building. She was not aware of the assault.

“Nothing, there's no memo or anything that's been out,” she said. “When I go in the building, I don't see anything posted.”

She told us she is concerned because she works at night and walks to her car in the parking lot nearby.

If investigators know who this man is, they are not saying. But they are just simply calling him a person of interest in the groping of a woman he apparently knows who lives in the building he allegedly snuck into two weeks ago.

The company that manages the property says it is cooperating with police and will share with residents the investigators' request for information about this incident.
