What are the warning signs of depression?

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Robin Williams had been battling severe depression recently. Williams was treated for substance abuse and depression for years.

Just last month Williams announced he was returning to a 12-step treatment program.

A feeling of hopelessness, helplessness, and an inability to think clearly.

These are warning signs of depression that can lead to suicide; FOX 10 spoke to people to know those feelings.

Robin Williams battled depression; Katie Ayotte knows that bleak feeling.

"Heavy, if I had to say one word it would be heavy, it is dark, it is lonely,' said Ayotte.

She overdosed on pills.

"About halfway through my suicide attempt my brain screamed out at me, what are you doing, this isn't the answer to the problem," she said.

She got help, medications, and now she teaches suicide survivors and prevention skills.

Wisdom that Gerald Gaines knows well. He took has dealt with depression.

"Suicide is permanent; there's no coming back. What you feel like on any given day, you will feel differently the next day. And it's just getting through that day, and if the next day is bad, it is just getting through that day and chances are they do get better," said Gaines.
