Safety measures improve accident-prone section of Willow Avenue

Posted: Updated:

Safety improvements have been made for a two-block stretch of Willow Avenue that saw 64 accidents between 2008 and 2013.

The section between 11th and 13th streets includes an elementary school, a large senior housing population, and a pocket park.

The safety improvements included as part of this project include:

Painted textured curb extensions at corners protected by vertical delineators (flexible bollards). They provide increased space for pedestrians waiting to cross intersections, reduce crossing distances, increase pedestrian visibility, reduce vehicle speeds by narrowing the roadway, and reduce illegal parking in crosswalks.

High visibility, straightened out crosswalks to further shorten crossing distances and to be more visible to drivers at night. Reduced crossing distances also provide extra time for green lights.

UPDATE: Hoboken 411 recently posted resident concerns regarding carbon monoxide emissions from idling cars parking in the new reverse angle parking spots along Willow Avenue in Hoboken.  Locals say the emissions from car exhaust pipes are facing apartments and getting into their homes.  Pedestrians walking along the sidewalks near these new parking spots also have concerns for their safety.  The spots do not come with "buffer bumpers" and drivers aren't used to judging the distance of the rear of their cars.
