Armed robbery of Southgate tanning salon caught on tape

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHGATE, Mich. (WJBK) -  Cheryl Selders was working Sunday night at her son's South Beach Sun Tanning Salon in Southgate on North Line Road, when two criminals came in demanding money.

"One had a ski mask on with a duffel bag and the other gentleman had a bandana around his face with a gun in his hand," Selders said. "The guy with a gun came over and said 'Open the register and give me all the cash.'
"The guy with the duffel bag came and emptied the drawer out into the duffel bag - it happened in like two minutes."

They got away with more than $300, along with  remote controls for the lights, keys and lost and found jewelry that was in the register.

Selders was terrified - she had a friend with her and two customers inside tanning at the time.

She did what she was told, to get them to leave.

"I know nothing about guns," Selders said. "I wasn't taking any chances."

Selders said the two had just stopped by the tanning salon on Saturday night.

"The same two gentlemen came the night before, without the mask on, at 10:39 the same time," she said. "I had the door locked. We see our last customer usually at 10:30."

Selders said she was polite - unlocked the door and spoke to them...

"I just told them that we don't see anybody after 10:30 and I shut the door and locked it back up."

Selders said that she could never forget that face - the one man - grinning ear to ear...

"He reminded me of a young Donny Osmond - I don't know if I can say that on camera - but that's what he would remind you of," she said. "Just a big smile, and I just thought (that) something's up."

Selders was right and now police are looking for these two.

She says the gunman is about 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds with brown hair and a goatee.

The friend is the same height  and about 130 pounds. Both are around 17 to 20 years old.

There was no getaway car, the duo left on bicycles.  Anyone who recognizes them or has information about the incident, please call the Southgate Police Department at (734) 258-3060.

"My son worked way too hard getting this business going for seven years for people to just come in and think it's okay to just rob us," Selders said.

There is a $1,000 reward from the tanning salon.
