Police : Men Broke Into Home Then Duct Taped Grandmother

Posted: Updated:
FREMONT, CA -

Fremont, California police are looking for two men they say broke into a home and duct taped a grandmother.

FOX's John Sasaki has the story.

It happened on Deep Creek Road near Paseo Padre Parkway, where there is an active neighborhood watch program, and residents say there is little crime.

"All the houses seem nice, so you don't really think about that happening," said a resident on a walk who would only give her name as Mona. But around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, the peace was shattered for one family.

"It's horrendous. It's awful. Nobody should ever have to go through something like this," exclaimed Geneva Bosques, spokeswoman for the Fremont Police Department.

Investigators say two men cased the homes from a back alley and likely saw an older woman was home essentially alone, so they just walked in the unlocked back door.

"Immediately began duct taping her. One of the suspects duct taped her, covered her eyes, covered her mouth and nose, while the other suspect pointed a gun at her," explained Bosques.

With her nine-month-old grandchild asleep and unaware nearby, the woman survived the ordeal, although she was lucky the robbers showed sympathy for her. "We believed that they recognized that she was panicking and having a hard time breathing because at one point the suspect came and actually slightly moved the tape so she could breath better."

Still, the woman may have blacked out, waking up near the front door. Her purse was gone. With only minor injuries, she called a relative who called 911.

"Just to know that someone would even break into a house, tie up a grandmother, and you said there was a child involved, that is alarming, I have never heard of that before," said nearby resident, Luis Lopez.

"I feel relatively safe, and I walk every day. But that creeps me out. Because I walk all around," said the woman on a walk named Mona.

Fremont Police are searching for the two robbers, and describe them both as Asian men, 30-35 years old, 5'10", 200 pounds. Both were wearing white t-shirts.

Investigators add that there were also two street robberies in the same neighborhood on Wednesday night, but the robbers were different people.
