How does Michigan view Snyder for taking Detroit into bankruptcy?

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - No one in the Democratic party has ever said this but you have to wonder if they haven't  been secretly hoping that Gov. Rick Snyder's gutsy move to plop Detroit in bankruptcy would disintegrate around election time next fall?

Sure it is crass politics, but imagine the impact on the Mark Scahuer campaign if the statewide headlines scream, "Snyder's Detroit Bankruptcy Plan Blows-up."

Oh boy, you could see the Schauer commercial then: Snyder puts whole state at risk with his failed bankruptcy scheme in Detroit.

But alas for the D's, based on how things are going, the headlines are likely to read: Snyder Saving Detroit.

Addressing this issue has been a challenge for Mr. Schauer. He and organized labor and civil rights advocates don't much care for the state swooping in and "taking away the people's democracy." But yet the Snyder/Kevyn Orr gambit has netted union support through major concessions and with Federal Judge Stephen Rhodes at the wheel, it looks like this thing might work and Orr could be out of Dodge by October first, one month before the election.

The unanswered inquiry is, how does the rest of the state look at the Snyder decision to pull the Chapter 9 trigger and how will that influence, if at all, their decision on Mr. Snyder in November?

Some will give him high marks for doing what other modern day governors did not even consider, while others will gripe about the $195 million the governor "swiped" from state taxpayers to move the process along.

For his part, Mr. Scahuer has been cautious about lobbing any bombs into the mix. He has been quite vocal about the governor violating the constitutional rights of Detroit retirees by giving their pension checks a haircut. The governor's legal eagles opine it was all on the up and up.

And the other day the challenger sort of agreed that bankruptcy had to be done.

"If you had been governor, would you have taken Detroit into bankruptcy?

Mr. Schauer: "I think probably so. I don't have access to those books but I don't think many folks are arguing that Detroit wasn't bankrupt."

And on that point he and the guy who put the city there, concur.
