Suspect killed in rollover crash along I-75

DETROIT (WJBK) - A rollover crash closed down the I-75 service drive between Seven and Eight Mile roads for much of Thursday morning as investigators tried to piece to together a crime that had deadly consequences.

Fox 2's Robin Murdoch is at the scene and reports a tow truck loaded a red Jeep Cherokee onto its bed. Sources say the vehicle was stolen and was being pursued by Hazel Park Police when it lost control and hit a tree early Thursday morning.

"This was a vehicle pursuit. The subjects lost control of their vehicle without any interaction from our vehicle part, our officers' part, other than attempting to stop them," says Hazel Park police chief Martin Barner. The Jeep is said to have topped 100 mph at one point.

Investigators say one of the suspects died after being thrown from the vehicle. A 17-year-old passenger was caught about an hour later hiding in an abandoned building in Detroit. A third suspect is still on the loose.

Police say they tried to pull over the Jeep in the area of Nine Mile and John R. roads when they witnessed it driving in tandem slowly with a silver Chevy Impala. When the officer attempted an investigative stop the two vehicles drove off in different directions.

Police are still searching for the Impala.
