Phoenix officer rescues five kittens from dumpster

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A horrible case of animal cruelty, five kittens were tossed into a dumpster in Phoenix.

A Phoenix Police Department officer found the kittens while responding to a call last week. Now that officer is caring for the kittens until they can be put up for adoption.

All five of the kittens have to be bottle-fed, but the officer caring for them doesn't mind.

Someone found the kittens in the dumpster of an apartment complex near 35th Ave & Camelback. The caller said he could hear the kittens whimpering.

"When he looked in he saw five little babies in the bottom of the box with other garbage and glass... they were dumped in the dumpster and left to die," said Officer Heather Krimm.

Officer Krimm felt the cats, which appeared to be just days old, were close to dying. She took them to the closest animal hospital, but the hospital couldn't keep the five kittens.

"It was almost 9 o'clock at night, the Humane Society was closed, so I went to the nearest store I could find to get the formula, and I started feeding them," she said.

She's been feeding them for the past week and a half while the Humane Society searches for a suitable foster home. As for who left the kittens in the dumpster, police don't know, but they have a message for pet owners.

"If you need help with animals just ask for it, it is out there," said Officer Krimm.
