Congressman questions fairness of case against son

Posted: Updated:

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The son of a Philadelphia congressman has been released on bail after his indictment on federal fraud, theft and tax charges.

Thirty-one-year-old Chaka Fattah Jr. was appointed a public defender for his hearing Tuesday in federal court.

Fattah is accused of lying about his income to obtain more than $200,000 in business loans and unlawfully using much of the money to pay personal expenses, including gambling debt.

He is also charged with stealing federal funds meant for city schools and filing false tax returns.

Heading into court, Fattah denied any wrongdoing. He did not enter a plea Tuesday.

His father, 10-term Democratic Rep. Chaka Fattah, says he is confident his son will be cleared.

The elder Fattah has himself been the subject of a federal investigation and is questioning whether his son is being treated fairly.
