Philadelphia Cabs Set To Have Security Cameras

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA - THE PPA will force every cab in the city to use security cameras in the fall. They say it's in the interest of safety, but some people say the cameras may record the wrong things.

FOX 29’S Dave Kinchen talked to cab drivers and riders.

Some people hailing cabs on a Friday night in Old City like the idea of cameras tagging along for the ride.

"I don't think it's a horrible thing. I think there's been attacks on cab drivers. There’s been attacks on other people,” said Jamie Krakow, who supports the cameras.

Other people disagree.

"What if I’m with someone I want to be with in private? And we're expressing ourselves and there's a camera recording everything," Max Marine, who opposes the cameras.

Either way the Philadelphia Parking Authority, which regulates taxis in the city, will soon require every single cab to have a security camera inside.

"If there's a camera in a cab, a predator or criminal will be less likely to commit a crime against a cab driver, or against someone in that cab,” said PPA Executive Director Vince Fenerty.

Fenerty says the video will connect to the same system that tracks your fare and location. The cost will be picked up by the owners and drivers.

"I firmly believe that it will be a minimal cost,” said Fenerty.

Taxi drivers are pushing for the technology due to the dangerous nature of their work.

"I had a gun put to my head. I’ve been robbed a couple times. I had a knife put to my throat," said President of the Taxi Workers Alliance of Pa. Ronald Blount.

Blount says having drivers help cover an estimated $1,200 per camera will hurt big time.

"If the Parking Authority and taxi owners keep throwing the costs of this new technology on to the drivers they are going to be put out of business," he said.

The PPA says cabs will have the cameras in two months. A similar effort was started  in Chicago. Cabs in New York and Los Angeles already are equipped with security cameras.
