CANTOR QUITTING ASAP - Yesterday he stepped down as House Majority Leader, now Eric Cantor is stepping down earlier than expected from Congress.
Cantor tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch this morning that he will step down Aug. 18 to make sure constituents have a voice during the lame-duck session. Cantor tells the newspaper he has asked Gov. Terry McAuliffe to call a special election for his district that coincides with the Nov. 4 general election. That would enable his successor to take office immediately. Cantor lost to Dave Brat, an underfunded, tea party-backed opponent, in his Republican primary in June.

VIRGINIA SAME SEX BAN DECSION - The future of Virginia's same-sex ban rests in the hands of Prince William County Circuit Court Clerk Michele B. McQuigg. She is the person who volunteered to defend Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban in January after it was first ruled unconstitutional by a federal district court judge. Now that it's been overturned by the 4th Circuit , McQuigg has not yet decided whether to appeal Monday’s decision to the U.S. Supreme Court. If McQuigg decides not to appeal, Monday’s decision will effectively kill Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage, which was approved by voters in 2006

IMMIGRATION BILL - The 5 week vacation will have to wait. Republicans planned to meet again today in hopes that revised versions of the border bill. In a surprising setback, the GOP leadership on Thursday was forced to abandon a vote on the slimmed-down $659 million measure, then huddled with republican members - some who had rushed back from National Airports - to figure out a way to pass a bill that would make it easier to deport the tens of thousands of unaccompanied children from Central America flooding into the United States.

SENATE STAFFERS SPIED - Did the CIA spy on Congressional staffers up on Capitol Hill? CIA Director John Brennan is back pedaling after a damming report by his inspector general sided against the CIA. According to an unclassified summary of the report released Thursday, 5 CIA employees, improperly accessed the Senate Intelligence Committee computers earlier this year during a disagreement over interrogation documents. Then, after Brennan ordered it to stop the CIA's reviewed the emails of Senate staffers and search them for key words.
