WASHINGTON -

A 15-year-old transgender person identifying as a female was stabbed on a Green Line Metro train Wednesday afternoon.

Metro Transit Police have arrested 24-year-old Reginald Anthony Klaiber of Greenbelt, Md., for assault with a deadly weapon. They say the charges include the possibility of enhanced penalties for hate/bias motivation.

Police say he stabbed the victim in the back at 4:38 p.m. aboard a train that was approaching the Fort Totten station.

Metro spokesperson Dan Stessel says Metro Transit Police apprehended the suspect as he attempted to flee the station. Police say officers recovered a 3.5-inch folding knife.

Witnesses tell FOX 5 the girl was sitting on the train when the suspect walked up to her, rudely speaking loud and asked her why she was wearing a wig and insulted her appearance. Within moments after those comments, the 24-year-old stabbed the teen in the back.

The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. She is in stable condition.
