Google study gathers data about human body

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

When you think of Google, you think of search engine and information. But Google is moving into completely new territory: inside the human body.

"Google research lab, Google X, is doing a new project called Baseline Study where they want to gather basically as much data as possible about the human body," says Jill Scharr, a staff writer at Tom's Guide.

Google will monitor 175 anonymous participants. Their body fluids have already been collected. Throughout the study, the participants sport wearable devices like the smart contact lens to gather biological data.

"That actually monitors the glucose levels in your body, the sugar, it was basically first developed to help diabetes patients," Scharr says. "This is one of the first rounds of testing the participants of Baseline Study will go through."

Google hopes to find "bio-markers," or genetic indicators, for illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

"If they can identify a bio-marker or sign that you are more susceptible for that kind of disease then you can start a preventative regimen," Scharr says.

Some current Google users told us they have mixed feelings about the research.
