Family's dog found tortured, starved and tied to fence

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Chester, a 5-year-old German shorthaired pointer, was a happy dog before he was hunted down and horrified. The Haydens says their dog went missing Saturday, July 12, and they thought they would never see him again.

On that day, they called Chester in just in time for dinner but he didn't come. They searched, reached out to their neighbors, posted fliers and placed calls to vet clinics.

Days went by. Each one was more devastating than the last - but then they heard whimpering and whining out in the back field.

Chester was back - but he'd been through hell.

"We found him tied to an electric fence with an electric fence wire," says Shannon Hayden.

"Somebody actually found a broken end of the electric fence wire and used that to tie both legs, three, four times around each leg, and then tied both legs together," says Charles Hayden Sr. "We found the dog out in the field with both hind legs wrapped up about 30 yards behind our property. So every time we'd called him, he could hear us but couldn't get to us."

Chester was missing for six days with no food or water. He'd lost 20 pounds. Maggots were found inside his wounds. The wire had cut down to the bone.

They cut and untangled the wires and rushed Chester to Wilson Veterinary Hospital in Washtington Township. Doctors believe what Chester's family already knew to be true - that this was done intentionally. His family says Chester could not have entangled himself like that on his own.
