Crime fighting bat cave: Arizona man creates special place for sick children

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - July 23 is the 75th anniversary of Batman's first appearance in a comic book. What you might not know is the super hero has a crime fighting cave right here in Arizona, but only very special guests are invited inside.

The bat signal flashes in the dark, the bat radar on high alert -- the electronics bugging devices all sounding alerts -- someone has just entered the crime fighting cave.

"It all started in 2009 when I bought a bat mobile," said Charles Keller, who had the idea to take that bat mobile out and give sick children a ride around town.

"We actually took a young man named Ethan for a ride. He wouldn't get in the bat mobile because he wouldn't go unless it was taking him to the bat cave," said Keller.

18 months later and countless hours of labor by dozens of volunteers, the cave opened.  Charitable organizations chose the honored guest, who gets a VIP tour.  To date, Keller says 122 families have visited and a third of a million dollars has been donated to over 80 charities.

One little boy has a special place here.

"Young man by the name of Colton Crowell was diagnosed with terminal leukemia.  We went out to visit his family on the evening he received his diagnosis," said Keller.

Keller has done everything he can to make this as realistic as possible for the kids, including Bruce Wayne's book case.

"It is a goal to build a permanent 15,000 square foot crime fighting cave," he said.

Keller is working to expand.  His hope that every sick child in the valley will be able to help Batman fight crime.
