Authorities are investigating an officer involved shooting incident that happened early Wednesday afternoon.
Covington Police were called out to the 3100 block area of Brookwood Circle just off Legion Drive around 12:30 p.m.
Police responded to a call of a suspicious man carrying a medieval type sword. The man is described as a white male.
According to police, a Covington officer exited his vehicle and was attacked by Julian Leon Faulkner Jr., 44, with the sword. The officer gave the attacker commands, but Faulkner did not listen and charged the officer with the sword over his head.
The officer opened fire and shot Faulkner. The suspect received immediate medical attention by responding officers and was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital. He is out of surgery, but there is no word on his condition at this time. Faulkner is expected to survive.
"The officer had no choice at that point," said Covington Police Department's Captain Craig Treadwell.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the incident and the officer will be placed on routine administrative leave until the investigation is completed.
Faulkner's neighbors watched as investigators searched his house Wednesday afternoon.
The GBI is trying to figure out what set Faulkner off and caused him to charge the officer with the sword.
Neighbors tell FOX 5 Faulkner is nice, but a little bit strange. They also say Faulkner was acting normal on Tuesday.
FOX 5 will continue to update this developing story.
