Phoenix area warned about excessive heat

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix and other areas in southwestern Arizona will be under an excessive heat warning much of Wednesday due to temperatures that will range from between 112 to 118 in low desert locations.

The warning issued by the National Weather Service runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., though forecasters say thunderstorms may mitigate the very hot temperatures.

The weather service says above-normal temperatures also are expected Thursday.

Meanwhile, a high pollution advisory for ozone is in effect for the Phoenix area for Wednesday due to high temperatures and a shift in air flow.

Air-quality officials are urging residents to drive less, refuel after dark and avoid waiting in long drive-thru lines. Also, children and adults with respiratory problems are advised to avoid outdoor activities Wednesday.
