Family comes home after volunteering during cross country road trip

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A valley family that decided to pay it forward this summer on a cross country road trip made it home this morning.

We've been following the family for months, and they finished the last good deed of their trip.

Tuesday marked the end of the Murset family's 6,500 journey from Phoenix to New York and back. They stopped in 25 cities helping families in need, by doing chores.

"They thought I was crazy," said Gregg Murset.

Gregg Murset is the father of the philanthropic family, his wife, and six kids piled into an RV this month and helped people along the way by painting, cleaning, and volunteering across the country.

"We'd go help them out for a few hours, meet the family, one of the kids would always have cancer or MPS," said Zach Murset.

Gregg has always wanted to help others and saw the adventure as a way to help educate his children. He says meeting the people they helped opened the kids's eyes.

"They really started to understand there was kind of a higher purpose to the trip, and they were excited to see some of the fun sights... but they really started understanding the deeper meaning and that was really impactful for our family," said Gregg Murset.

Volunteering at the Ronald McDonald house this morning was the last stop on the trip. The kids say they're happy finally to be home, but the trip was worth it.

"Three weeks out of the summer is a long time, especially when you have a short summer, so at first we were pretty hesitant, but it turned out to be a really awesome trip," said Zach Murset.

the family said the came up with the idea 2 1/2 months ago; it wasn't something they had been planning. They say right now they're happy to be home and don't know what they will do next.
