RANCHO MIRAGE (CNS) - A White House spokesman today again shot down reports that President Barack Obama is buying a house in the Coachella Valley. The Desert Sun and Los Angeles Times both reported that area real estate agents -- speaking on condition of anonymity -- said the Obamas are buying a $4.2 million home in the Rancho Mirage gated community of Thunderbird Heights.

Listing agent Marc Lange declined to comment on the rumored buyer, but told City News Service that escrow on the seven-bedroom estate will close next week.

At a White House briefing today, a reporter asked Press Secretary Josh Earnest if Obama "or anyone on his behalf" has bought or is planning to buy a house in California.

"I've seen those reports, too. Those reports are not accurate," Earnest said.

Obama fueled speculation with three Coachella Valley visits in a little more than a year, most recently over Father's Day weekend last month. During that visit, the Obamas stayed at the residence of White House decorator Michael Smith and his partner James Costos in Thunderbird Heights, and the president played golf at the Sunnylands estate in Rancho Mirage and at billionaire Oracle software company founder Larry Ellison's Porcupine Creek estate.

In June 2013, Obama met with Chinese President Xi Jinping at Sunnylands and, last February, had talks there with King Abdullah II of Jordan. Former President Gerald Ford also lived in Thunderbird Heights.

The 3.29-acre hilltop estate the Obamas are rumored to be buying has a 6,100-square-foot, four-bedroom main home and a smaller casita. The grounds include a pool, two spas, a 20-foot waterfall, lagoon, and a putting green with a sand trap. The main house has a gym and tanning and spa rooms, according to broker HOM Sotheby's International.
