FOX Beat: Kevin McCarthy geeks out with 'Guardian of the Galaxy' and 'Hercules' cast

Posted: Updated:

Hey everyone! Kevin McCarthy here! I was out in Portland and Los Angeles this weekend for a set visit and a couple of press junkets!! I had the incredible opportunity to geek out with Vin Diesel, Chris Pratt, The Rock, Zoe Saldana, Benicio Del Toro and more!

Since I was 8-years old, I always dreamed of visiting a movie set.  I wanted to see the filmmakers directing the actors and how the movie magic is created! I’ve always been fascinated with the behind-the-scenes aspects of movies, which is why I’m always asking actors how shots look on set.  I always say how much I love my job because I’m essentially going to film school every time I interview an actor or director.  My dream in life has always been to be a director.  To be able to sit across from my cinematic idols is truly an honor and I’m so thankful to be able to do that.

When I received an invite to visit the set of the new stop-motion animated film, “Boxtrolls”, I immediately jumped on the opportunity.  Stop-motion animation has always fascinated me because the animation is done in-camera.  The characters are built and then are animated through stop-motion one frame at a time.  There are 24-frames in one second of film.  Therefore, for every second of film, the character has to be moved 24-times to show natural movement.  Stop-motion has been around for ages.  If you’ve seen the original “King Kong” from 1933, you’ve seen stop-motion animation.  One of the most famous uses of the technology is Henry Selick’s “Nightmare Before Christmas”, which is one of my favorite movies of all time!

I flew to Portland to visit Laika studios, where films like “Coraline” and “Paranorman” were made.  “The Boxtrolls” is their third major production and just wrapped recently.  I was invited to tour the facility and learn about the process of stop-motion animation.  The studio uses a very interesting combination of stop-motion and computer-generated images (CGI).  The most fascinating aspect was the 3D printing technology.  Tune in to Fox 5 in a few weeks for my video package showing the tour and how stop-motion animation is brought to life on the big screen.

At the end of my tour, I was able to sit down with one of the films’ stars, Isaac Hemptstead-Wright.  You may not know the name but you definitely know him as BRAN STARK from “Game of Thrones”! He’s the character who is always creepily rolling his eyes back in his head! Therefore, I had to know if he was able to actually roll his eyes back in real life or if it was all a digital effect.  He immediately rolled his eyes back in his head!!!

I immediately started geeking out! The full interview will closer to September for the film’s release.  Here is a picture of Isaac and me before the interview!

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to geek out with the stars of “Hercules” and “Guardians of the Galaxy”!! First up was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.  I knew that Allison Seymour was a huge fan of him so I went in hoping that he would do some type of shout out! I sit down in the chair and he immediately remembers me from our previous interviews! That always geeks me out!!! We start talking about movies and he starts nerding out about movie sets.  In his new movie, “Hercules”, director Brett Ratner actually built many of the sets you see on screen! As the interview was coming to a close, I mentioned Allison has an “Ask Allison” segment every Friday and asked if he could submit a question for her! He turned to the camera and did a hilarious question for his “friend”, Hercules! Tune in Friday morning to hear his question and Allison’s answer!

I ended the weekend talking to the cast of “Guardians of the Galaxy”.  Let me say real quick that the film is INCREDIBLY FUN and has one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard since “Pulp Fiction”.  One of my favorite actors of all time, Benicio Del Toro, is in the film but I heard he was working super limited hours! I was already excited enough about being able to talk to Chris Pratt and Vin Diesel but I was keeping an eye out or Benicio!  First up was Chris Pratt and he remember me from our “Lego Movie” interview! We geeked out about the film’s special effects and how it looks on set when he’s talking to Rocket (the raccoon character) and Groot (The alien tree character).  Half-way through the production of the film, the two characters were cast.  Bradley Cooper was cast as Rocket and Vin Diesel was cast as Groot.  Even crazier is that Diesel only has THREE WORDS to say the entire movie; “I am Groot”! Trust me though, it’s much more complicated than that.  I spoke to the entire cast including Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and director, James Gunn.  Bautista is actually from Washington D.C. so when I walked in the room and he heard I was from DC, he was really excited.  I brought up a mutual friend of ours, Chad Dukes, and his manager asked to take a picture of us.  Bautista than tweeted it to Chad and me, giving DC a nice shout-out!

The day was coming to an end and I was waiting on Benicio Del Toro.  Keep in mind, we are waiting at the Disney Studios lot.  I was already so happy to be there but knowing Del Toro was going to be there was almost too much excitement.  If you’re not familiar with his work, go home and rent “The Usual Suspects”, “The Way of the Gun” (My personal favorite of his), “Traffic” (He won the Oscar), “Sin City” and more! One of the best actors working today! Del Toro finally arrives and I’m the third person up to interview him.  I walk in the room and explain to him that I spent an entire summer, in high school, watching his entire filmography.  We start talking about the movie and the special effects and his character’s transformation.  Right when he started talking about transformations, I knew that was my in to bring up “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”; one of my favorite movies of all time.  He explained to me that he gained 38-pounds for the role!  INSANE! We then continued to talk movies and at the the interview, we randomly got in to a conversation about “The Wild Bunch” and I mentioned that I loved Sam Peckinpah.  Del Toro had a big smile on his face and he said “You know your movies!” That was all I needed!!!

Amazing end to an amazing weekend!

I also had the honor of joining the Fox 5 News Morning Sunday show, LIVE FROM LA, to review "Boyhood" and air my interview with Cameron Diaz/Jason Segel.
