Md. hiker hospitalized after being bitten by snake

Posted: Updated:
FREDERICK, Md. -

A Maryland hiker is recovering after being attack by a snake. It happened along the yellow trail of the Manor area at Cunningham Falls State Park and is home to a high volume of poisonous rattlesnakes and copperheads.

“I've seen a snake -- it came almost right out from under my foot,” said camper Cindy Vahle. “I stood there and screamed for my son-in-law.”

Maryland campers now on alert after the snake attack and dozens of poisonous sightings in just the past 24 hours here at the park located just north of Frederick.

“My kids have both been taught when you see a snake, you stop moving,” said Laura Smith. “You slowly back up while you’re calling for mom or dad. You don't go towards it.”

The male hiker was bitten by the snake Sunday night. It is unknown what type of snake chomped down on the guy, but many heavily-wooded areas like this throughout Maryland are known for rattlesnakes and copperheads. Still, with the recent snake attack, some campers don’t seem too worried.

As for the victim, he was checked out at the hospital and expected to be okay. But these snakes aren’t going anywhere. The warm temperatures and evening hours seem to be their best time to strike.

And if you are bit, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, here is what they want you to know:

Don't suck out the venom like you might see in a movie. Don’t wrap your wound. Don’t cut into the bite. Try to remember the snake’s size and color. Stay calm to slow down the spread of venom and call for help.
