JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - More than a thousand police officers gathered in New Jersey's second-largest city to bury a police officer who was gunned down in the line of duty.

Gov. Chris Christie was among the mourners who attended Friday's funeral in Jersey City for Officer Melvin Santiago. The 23-year-old rookie was killed Sunday in what authorities have called an ambush. His assailant was killed during a subsequent shootout.

The city on Thursday promoted Santiago to the rank of detective and posthumously awarded him the department's medal of honor.

Meanwhile, the town of Waldwick also is mourning a police officer.

Patrolman Christopher Goodell was killed early Thursday when his unmarked car was struck by a tractor-trailer.

The truck driver has been charged with vehicular homicide.
