Student Essays on the Holocaust Trigger More Outrage

Posted: Updated:

In a packed school board chamber a Redlands Rabbi Hillel Cohn waves a yellow patch his cousin and all Jews were forced to wear in Nazi Germany. It is in the shape of a Star of David with the word “Jude” in the center. It was worn by one of his cousins killed in a death camp. But, Cohn says he lost a lot of family including “grandparents, aunts, uncles and first cousins… murdered by the Nazis.”

Cohn got out alive and now is lashing out at the Rialto school board over a controversial class assignment. It was for 8th graders to write an essay on whether the holocaust was real or not. Those who believe there was a holocaust said things in essays like… "The holocaust was real because it began in 1933 when Adolph Hitler came to Germany and ended in 1945.

"The holocaust is real because there is proof"

"The holocaust was real because of Hitler's hatred of Jews. Hitler blamed the Jews for Germany's loss in World War 1. This is why Hitler hated the Jews."

But, there are dozens of others that upset a lot of people when they were published by the San Bernardino Sun. Essays, denying the Holocaust ever happened… that had words like…

"They would have had to have killed 187 people an hour in order to kill 6 million people.

Therefore it is impossible."

"If they would have even experimented these so called gas chambers the Nazis would have died also, so I do not believe in gas chambers."

"The Jews may have invented the story of the Holocaust for political or financial gain."

But, for those who have look at the essays like Rialto School District Attorney William Curley said “The bulk of them, the vast majority, agreed that the holocaust was real and was horrible.”

But, to Curley and Rabbi Hillel Cohn the fact that dozens of students have decided there was no Holocaust is troubling. And, more needs to be done in the school district to address what’s happened.
