Family of murdered Inkster toddler faces suspected killers in court

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - The family of 2-year-old Kamiya Gross had to relive her murder when the two men accused of killing her went before a judge Wednesday.

The father of the little girl testified in the preliminary exam for Raymone Jackson and Raphael Hearn.

"I get shot nine times. My daughter gets shot once and my cousin gets shot once, told them who shot me just in case I didn't make it," Kenneth French said in court.

Jackson and Hearn are both charged with first-degree murder.

French says he, Jackson and Hearn were friends for years, but French says trouble began when Hearn was shot at after-hours club in April. French says Hearn and Jackson wanted revenge because French didn't have their backs.

Witnesses say Jackson walked up and calmly pointed a gun at little Kamiya before leaving in a white car. A friend of Jackson and Hearn's, who was riding in the passenger seat, says Jackson admitted what he did, saying he was 'taking care of business'.

Defense attorneys insist the shooting was random, adding that French's memory may have been clouded after surgery.

But as testimony unfolded, witnesses and the family of Kamiya say Jackson's gestures and laughter in court say it all.

"He was in court to disrespect the family, making finger gestures to the mother," says Kimberly Borom, a family friend. "He gave her the flip-off finger in court."

"I expected that. I did expect his behavior to be like that because he's afraid. He did something that he knows he shouldn't have [done], knowing he's an a parent himself," says Kamiya's mother Erica Gross.

In court, we learned that Jackson and Hearn both have criminal pasts. Jackson is bound over for trial but Hearn is scheduled to have a competency exam on September 4.

While both are charged with first-degree murder, Jackson also has a separate charge against him of torture for allegedly killing Kamiya right in front of her father.
