DTE Energy Farm provides fresh food to local families in need

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - DTE Energy has four community gardens using formerly vacant land under power lines. They've teamed up with Gleaner's Food Bank for all of the fresh fruits and veggies to be delivered to local people in need.

Gleaners distributes about 40 million pounds of food each year to several hundred thousand people. Last year, the farm project yielded 27,000 pounds of fresh food.

"Every time we drop it off, immediately it's gone. We've not even gotten it off the truck sometimes, people are immediately milling around and asking us if they can take some," says organic farmer Katie Long.

If you'd like to grab a shovel and get involved each garden has a volunteer day once a week. Anyone of any age is invited and no experience is necessary.

Farmington Hills            Tues, 8am-11am            38600 West 10 Mile Rd.

Plymouth Twp.                Thurs, 4pm-7pm            50899 Powell Rd.

Washington Twp.            Mon, 4pm-7pm            12700 30 Mile Rd.

Westland                    Mon, 4:30pm-6:30pm        38155 Cherry Hill Rd.

The farm project is so successful, DTE has plans to expand it. They'll be adding a fifth garden in Detroit in 2015.
