Twins Undergo Surgery During Mother's Pregnancy At CHOP

UNIVERSITY CITY -

Dillon and Aiden Vinjamuri are happy little toddler twins. You can’t even tell them apart now, but about two years ago, Aiden, was starving inside the womb.

“I felt great, and that’s the scary thing,” said Rachel Vinjamuri, the mother of the twins. “There were no warning signs. I was ready to go on a trip to Disney World.”

But Dillion and Aiden’s mother decided to get a quick checkup first.

“They did the ultrasound and they noticed there was a difference in fluid,” she recalled.

At seventeen weeks into her pregnancy, there was also a major difference in the sizes of the twins.

Twin-twin Transfusion Syndrome, also known as TTTS for short, meant Dillion was being fed too much, while Aiden was hardly being fed at all and would not survive without surgery.

“We went from super happy to the worst possible scenario you could imagine,” Rachel said.

Rachel’s doctor in Reading sent her to CHOP immediately. Their doctor, Nahla Khalek, specializes in fetoscopic surgeries.

Referred to as laser therapy, a certain procedure had to be done to form a separate sac for each baby, in order to result in a balanced flow and development.

“It just seemed like a few minutes and she told me the babies looked healthy and were super handsome,” Rachel said.

“There’s all these ifs but I definitely believe somebody was out there looking over us.”

Only two weeks of recovery and now two years later, the twins check out just fine! They and big brother Logan are off and rolling.

“I always like to think there are angels watching over our families,” states Doctor Khalek, “But I also do believe in my heart of hearts that a mother’s instinct is really what guides them to us.”

“But I think the doctors themselves are angels, without them we wouldn’t be here,” says the father of the twins.
