9-Year-Old Takes A Joyride With His Little Cousin

Posted: Updated:
WEST BEND, WI -

An investigation is underway after a 9-year-old boy took his 4-year-old cousin for a joyride.

Police say it is the second time in a month the boy went on a drive through town unaccompanied.

Clint Dexter was the driving through a wooded area in Washington County when he spotted the swerving vehicle. He then made an emergency call to authorities.

“When I got closer, I took a look over and that's when I noticed the young kid was driving the vehicle. It looked like he wasn't tall enough to see over it, so he's looking through the steering wheel as he was driving.” Dexter said.

By the time a sheriff deputy caught up with the 9-year-old driver and his 4-year-old passenger, they had driven six miles. The boys ride finally came to a stop when they ran into a ditch.

Although their family alerted law enforcement when the kids and the car went missing, West Bend Police say two women and a man are facing charges of child neglect.

According to TMJ4, the family in question has already experienced unthinkable tragedy due to a car crash.

A relative confirms that the 9-year-old driver's older sibling died four years ago after she made a sudden U-turn into the path of a pick-up truck. She was a senior at West Bend High School.

Dexter says they could have easily hit another driver or even hurt themselves.

The boys were taken into custody by the Washington County Human Services Department.

The Washington County District Attorney will ultimately decide whether to file child neglect charges against the boy's three relatives.
