ST. CHARLES, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man and a woman are behind bars after one of them allegedly stole a vehicle, injured a detective and caused a police chase Sunday night in the northwest suburbs, the Courier-News is reporting.

Bond was set at $65,000 Tuesday for Jorge Chavez, 18, of the 6000 block of South Rockwell in Chicago, charged with two counts of receiving/possessing a stolen vehicle, three counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer, and one count each of burglary, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, and aggravated fleeing and eluding. All the charges are felonies.

Jamie B. Thurnau, 19, of Elgin was charged with a burglary, and two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, all felonies; and a misdemeanor count of resisting/obstructing a peace officer. She was ordered held on $25,000.

According to reports, officers in the Walmart parking lot at 1100 S. Randall Road in Elgin recognized Chavez about 8:48 p.m. and knew he had an active warrant. When officers went to apprehend him, they tried to flee, and one of the officers broke the car window and pepper sprayed the two.

The officer sustained serious cuts to his arm, requiring surgery, police said.

Officers caught up with the fleeing car, which Thurnau was driving before she lost control. At times, police said, the car was speeding at 21 mph over the speed limit and ran several red lights, police said.

After she lost control of the car, Thurnau took off on foot, while Chavez kept driving. He ended up crashing the vehicle at Sundown Road and Mavis Avenue in South Elgin, police said.

The 2001 Acura they were driving had been reported stolen, police said, and the couple admitted they had gone to Walmart to steal beer.

Thurnau is back in court July 23, while Chavez’ next appearance is July 25.
